It was in the last days of May that I retraced my route back up to Lincolnshire. This time I was going it alone.

Sally looked significantly more upbeat when she greeted me in the driveway this time around. She gave me a hug and invited me in for a cuppa while we waited for the Dyno Rod guy to turn up.

As she nursed her mug between her hands, she told me she was prepared for the worst. The not knowing had been the most painful part of the grieving process.

I told her not to pin her hopes on the mystic but agreed that the coincidence of a shed, drain and corrugated roof near her home was remarkable.

Suddenly a flash of bright orange passed by the kitchen window. The wait was over. It was the Dyno Rod van. We rushed to the front door.

A man in his mid-twenties jumped out of the driver’s seat. He looked a bit grubby from working all day but he was a friendly chap. He had a clipboard in one hand and lifted the top page, checking for the job details. ‘So, where’s the blockage?’ he asked.

Clearly the bloke I was chatting to on the phone hadn’t told this man the job description. ‘It’s not a blockage, mate, but a missing cat in a drain,’ I explained.

The guy blinked a few times in shock. ‘Ooo-kay, so where’s the drain?’ He looked confused.

‘We don’t really know. Next to a building with a tin roof.’

‘Come off it!’

‘No, for real, that’s what the psychic in India said.’ I went on to explain the unique situation. He might have thought he was on Candid Camera.

After he’d got over his surprise at the unusual situation, he was on board with our mission. He said he was a pet person himself and would see what he could do. The plan was that I’d go with Sally in the search car and Mr Dyno Rod would follow in his van.
